S.W.’s Verdict
The Coen Brothers stripped a thriller down to its mechanical skeleton and discovered it was more terrifying that way. Anton Chigurh moves through this film like weather — not evil in any human sense, just an absolute force that arrives and doesn't negotiate. The coin toss scene generates more dread than most horror films manage in their entire runtime. Javier Bardem earned every award with a performance that's barely a performance at all — it's closer to a natural disaster wearing a bad haircut. The ending frustrates people who wanted resolution. The ending is the point.
