Eastwood spent decades building the myth of the Western gunslinger and then made a film about what happens when the myth rots. Gene Hackman's sheriff is one of the great screen villains because he believes he's the hero. The final act turns a slow burn into something genuinely dangerous. A Western that earns its violence by making you wait for it.
