S.W.’s Verdict
Park Chan-wook adapted a Victorian thriller, relocated it to 1930s Korea under Japanese occupation, and produced a film that operates as a con-within-a-con-within-a-love-story. The three-act structure literally replays events from different perspectives, and each replay changes everything you thought you understood. Structurally it's a Swiss watch. Visually it's a painting that keeps revealing hidden figures. The eroticism serves the narrative rather than decorating it. One of the few films where repeated viewing doesn't diminish the surprise — it multiplies it.
