S.W.’s Verdict
Jean-Pierre Jeunet dipped Paris in amber and handed it to Audrey Tautou, who proceeds to carry the entire film on facial expressions alone. The whimsy is relentless — every surface is saturated, every sound design choice is playful, every camera movement has an opinion. It could be insufferable, but it works because Amélie's loneliness underneath the charm is real. Some films are comfort food. This one is a meticulously constructed pastry that you know is too sweet but you eat the whole thing anyway.
