Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway make bank robbery look like a date that spiraled. Arthur Penn builds the tone from screwball comedy to ultraviolence so gradually you do not notice the shift until it is too late. The finale is still one of the most brutal sequences ever filmed in Hollywood.
