S.W.’s Verdict
Alfonso Cuarón filmed his childhood through the eyes of the woman who raised him. The black-and-white cinematography is so precise that individual grains of sand feel deliberate. Yalitza Aparicio carries the film without ever raising her voice. The beach scene is devastating. Some stretches move at the speed of memory — which means slowly, and on purpose. Not every viewer will have patience for it, but the ones who do will feel it in their ribs.
