S.W.’s Verdict
Akira Kurosawa invented the modern action ensemble and then no one matched it for seventy years. Seven distinct warriors, each with a readable personality, each with a tactical purpose, all introduced with the efficiency of a military briefing. At three and a half hours, it has no right to maintain momentum, but Kurosawa understood pacing the way a conductor understands silence. The final shot quietly devastates: the samurai won the battle and lost everything that mattered.
