Singin’ in the Rain (1952)

The platonic ideal of a movie musical — every number exists because the story demands it, not because someone needed to fill three minutes. Gene Kelly dancing in actual rain with an actual grin is one of the few moments in cinema that feels completely unmanufactured. The satire of Hollywood's transition to sound is sharper than it gets credit for. The whole thing operates at a level of precision and joy that most films can't reach in their best individual scene.
