The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Sergio Leone understood something most directors don't — tension lives in duration, not speed. The final three-way standoff stretches time until your nervous system starts bargaining with your eyes to blink. Ennio Morricone's score doesn't accompany the film; it IS the film. Eastwood barely speaks, Van Cleef barely moves, and Wallach does enough talking for all three. At nearly three hours, it earns every minute because Leone never rushes a single shot.
