S.W.’s Verdict
DaCosta wasn't interested in copying Boyle's handheld chaos and instead delivered a mood study wearing a zombie film's skin. Fiennes is magnetic — feral and erudite simultaneously, which shouldn't work but does because he's Ralph Fiennes. The atmosphere is oppressive in a way that demands respect even when the pacing tests patience. Where it falters is the Garland script's tendency to mistake ambiguity for depth. Some viewers will call it the franchise's best entry. Others will call it incoherent. Both are partially right.
